El Segundo Swim Club set to open in Houston’s Second Ward

Next week promises to be another scorcher in Houston. Perfect timing for a new swim club readying to open the first week of July in the city’s Second Ward.

El Segundo Swim Club is a new membership-only club that will feature a 1,350-square-foot swimming pool, cabanas, lounge and full bar. The private club will also offer day passes for non-members.

El Segundo’s Instagram account shows a post for July 4-8 preview event, opening at 11 a.m. on July 4, 5, 6 and 7; at noon on July 8. Day passes are available for $20.

Set in an industrial area of Houston a few blocks from the bayou, the club at 5180 Avenue L is designed by Gin Braverman of Gin Design Group (responsible for the design at Axelrad Beer Garden, Beckrew Wine House and Public Services bar). The design, according to a press release, mixes “high design with a laid back playfulness reminiscent of a nostalgic L.A. pool party.”

“We’re using structures like shipping containers to blend in with the industrial feel of the neighborhood, but the club will be lush with plants and have the cabana feel of Sunset Beach,” Braverman said.

Owner Matthew Healey said he came up with the idea when he was looking for an alternative to the hotel pools scene in Houston.

“We want to create something fun and unpretentious,” Healey said. “We’re creating a little oasis just off the beaten path. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

The press release did not state the price of memberships or day passes. The club’s website does not list, either. We reached out to the public relations firm and will update with prices when available.
