Gin is the founder and creative director of gin design group, an award-winning interior design firm of dynamic creators + designers, centrally based in Houston, TX with coast-to-coast reach. Gin’s diverse background in design coupled with many years working in the food + beverage industry provided her with a strong foundation to establish and develop her prolific interior design practice, which specializes in developing originative and fully integrated designs for F+B concepts.
After graduating from The University of Texas at Austin, Gin began her career in New York City working in production design. Her creative nature and passion for art and design was given direction by additional classes in fashion, graphic design, and photography at the Fashion Institute of Technology and International Center of Photography. Her quest for travel led to an internship with international design firm, MLD in Taipei, Taiwan where she lived for 2 years.
After her return to the US, she spent another few years at Installations Antiques in Houston working hands-on with wood and metal finishes, building custom furniture and lighting.
Her next design venture returned her to NY as a lead designer for HGTV’s first full home remodel show. Ever-inspired through continued travels both stateside and abroad, touring textile plants, lighting, furniture, and tile factories, attending art and design fairs, and touring restaurants, bars and hotels, she constantly seeks to push the boundaries of design, and along with a talented team of collaborators, to make each project original and noteworthy.
Most importantly, Gin strives to work with clients to realize THEIR vision and make the design process fun and exciting; turning their early ideas into a finished product that exceeds expectations and turning great client relationships into great friendships.
Houston local and Art Institute alum, Kimberly Kaptain joined gin design group in 2013 as an intern. She rapidly became an invaluable part of the firm, and as an associate designer has been enthusiastically executing innovative designs ever since. One of her top projects with the firm has been designing the green rooms and other rest spaces in Houston’s most exciting new concert venue, White Oak Music Hall. Though green rooms and restrooms are often an afterthought in most music venues, the firm’s notable designs caught the attention of NBC’s “The Voice ” and a subsequent photoshoot for one of the show’s contestants was featured in LOCAL Houston Magazine.
Kaptain’s interest in travel and her willingness to execute regular reconnaissance into Houston’s cocktail culture helps the flourishing designer with inspiration that she brings back to her colleagues and clients.
